Bowie Youth Soccer Academy

Coaching Staff

Benson Mungai began his soccer career in Nairobi, Kenya where he played in the Olympic Youth Centre, a soccer program located in every major city in Kenya. The Olympic Youth Centres were established by Bernhard Zgoll and sponsored by the German government. Zgoll and his elite team of coaches recruited and trained top soccer talent throughout the country and formed the backbone of Kenyan soccer. The Olympic Youth Centre coaches sought to identify and develop the best talent for the youth level, regardless of socio-economic background, with a goal of fielding the best national team squad. Zgoll later went on to become the Kenya national team Head Coach.

When Benson was 18 years old, he moved to the United States and played college soccer at Hellenic College in Brookline, MA. Benson brings a wealth of soccer experience and a vast knowledge of the game to BYSA. He has coached youth soccer in Bowie, MD from intramural to elite State Cup teams. Through BYSA, Benson seeks to provide youth of all backgrounds the opportunity to learn and develop their soccer skills, with a focus on fundamentals at an affordable price. Benson believes that soccer, like other sports, can provide an escape from the challenges of daily life and that a coach and a team can have a powerful, positive influence on a young person. Benson strives to lift players beyond the game of soccer and to develop skills that will serve them well into adulthood. Benson holds a US Soccer Federation Class E coaching license.
